Osgood, Concertino No. 2 in A minor for violin and piano
Marion G. Osgood (1859-after 1940) was an American violin teacher, soloist and composer based in Boston for most of her life. She is best known as the creator and director of the first professional women's orchestra in the U.S., "Marion Osgood's Ladies Orchestra," which existed from 1884-1911. Members of the orchestra were paid for their performances (gasp!) and held to a strict rehearsal schedule.
Osgood wrote showpieces for her own concert use and, as one of the most sought-after teachers in the Boston area, also composed several pieces for students. The two student concertinos fall into the latter category. Each have three movements (fast/slow/fast), but two very distinct characters. The G major concertino is more outgoing and playful, while the A minorĀ is darker and a little exotic. Both are written to be played in 1st-3rd position. Great additions to the teaching repertoire!
