Clarke, "Chinese Puzzle" for flute, violin, viola, cello (ad lib) and piano
Clarke wrote the original version of Chinese Puzzle for violin and piano in 1921. She wrote down the tune after hearing it from a Chinese friend of her brother (full and entertaining story in the editorial notes of the music). This version, never before published, was created in 1926 for the Aeolian Players, a well-known chamber group in London of which Clarke was a founding member. If you know the violin and piano or viola and piano versions (and you should-- wonderful short recital and teaching pieces, each published in a "Shorter Pieces" collection for the instruments and published by Oxford University Press), it's delightful to hear how Clarke expanded the sonorities available in this chamber version. An mp3 pulled from the Sibelius file is included below just to give you a taste of the work.
